The Garden Route is no doubt one of the most beautiful and striking coastlines. The N2 Highway winds along many towns and resorts of the Garden Route and coast. The borders of the Garden Route boast with not one but three mountain ranges namely the Outeniqua, Langeberg and the picturesque Tsitsikamma mountains. The Garden Route is one of the best boat based whale watching destinations in the world.  Whale watchers can look towards the west of the Garden Route where the Breede River meets the Indian Ocean. Here is St Sebastian Bay, an annual breeding ground for the Southern Right Whale. This annual occurrence can be seen between June and September from Witsand.  In the year 2005 more than 125 whales were spotted in the nursery including over 50 pairs of cows and their calves.

Individuals that are more culturally inclined, can choose from a range of art shops, museums, township tours, stunning historic  buildings, craft shops and various venues with live music. Delicious food and beverages can be found in any of the lovely, quaint restaurants along the beautiful coastline. A lot of these restaurants specialise in seafood dishes.

Golf lovers can enjoy any of the golf courses in the Garden Route such as the famous Fancourt Golf Course in George.

Long stretches of golden beaches and favourable water temperatures make any of the smaller towns such as Mossel Bay, Hartenbos or Plettenberg Bay a holidaygoer's dream.

The history of the Garden Route dates back as far as 25 000 BC when the Khoi and San tribes (bushmen) inhabited the area. Since then the Garden Route and Eastern and Western Cape have undergone many changes. 2000 years ago after the arrival of the Xhosa tribe and the sudden arrival of European and settlers during the 17th and 18th centuries, the area has become residence to many cultures.

From the 18th to the 20th centuries, conflicts and battles between the Xhosas and European settlers became common place and in the early 20th century the Garden Route and Cape Province saw the Anglo-Boer War. The Union of South Africa was created in 1910 uniting the country.

Today the Garden Route property has truly blossomed into a world class tourist destination offering a unique and exhilarating experience for all its visitors. The Garden Route, including towns such as Knysna, Mossel Bay, Hartenbos and Dana Bay - popular among overseas visitors and leisure property owners - see an annual arrival of international "swallows" during the period from September to April. With its spectacular scenery, outstanding golf courses and outdoor activities as well as safe and relaxed lifestyle, many overseas buyers look to retire here either now or in the future and they tend to look in the price range from R2.5-million upwards for a lock-up-and-go home either in a secure estate or close to the beaches.
