Mossel Bay Property
INTRODUCTION:
The Dutch navigator, Paulus van Caerden, named it Mosselbaai when he passed through in 1601 - obviously because of all the mussels his crew found here spread out in their millions on the rocks around the bay. Popular Mossel Bay property is the historical capital of the Eden District in the Garden Route region of the Western Cape of South Africa and is situated halfway between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth.
Boasting the first fuels-from-gas plant in the world - Mossel Bay is situated just 40 km from the international airport at George. Beautiful Mossel Bay is also a coastal village and harbour of the world famous Garden Route. It has a long history as it was the first landfall of the Portuguese explorer Bartholomew Diaz in 1488, more than 500 years ago. In October 2009 Mossel Bay was named one of the 10 best municipalities in South-Africa. We also experience the 2nd best weather pattern on this planet.

Petro South-Africa is the single most important industry of the town and also the biggest source of employment. Agriculture activities consist mainly of mixed farming although the first planted vineyards will soon produce the first wine of this area. Industries of all kinds can be found in Voorbaai. There is a notable migration taking place from the north to the Southern Cape which stimulates the building and property industry of the town and surrounding areas.
BEACHES:
Some of the finest beaches in the Garden Route and Western Cape are to be found in Mossel Bay. Diaz Beach in season is an absolute buzz. Expect to see organised entertainment, tasty snacks and food vendors and great coffee shops and restaurants. De Bakke Beach is situated between 2 very popular caravan parks with lots of braai facilities on the beach. Santos Beach earned blue flag status, which means there are life guards on duty, 24 hour security service, no alcohol is allowed on the beach and the water and beach are safe and clean. The popular Pavilion restaurant is situated a few hundred metres on the beach away from Santos beach. All of these abovementioned beaches are perfect for family and children.
HARBOUR:
Mossel Bay has the smallest working, commercial harbour of the coastal cities and towns in South Africa. Fishing boats deliver fresh fish twice a week to Vikings and Irvin & Johnston for despatch inland. The locals and those in the know also purchase fresh fish from the retail outlet at the harbour.
A recently built fish factory significantly adds to the employment opportunities in Mossel Bay.
Occasionally a passenger liner throws anchor in the bay of Mossel Bay for passengers to be shipped into the harbour with a smaller boat. A well known and well established yacht club is situated here which offers sailing to the schools as a sport.
PROPERTY IN MOSSEL BAY:
Mossel Bay is particularly attractive to property investors because of its low crime rate. In fact, not too long ago (2007) it was crowned the safest town in South Africa. The older part of Mossel Bay is unique in the sense that most, if not all, houses are north-facing to give a glorious view of the bay and the Outeniqua mountains, which is a view nowhere else to be found in South Africa. Quite a few old houses had originally been constructed of rock more than a century ago and were declared historical monuments.
